Probability of Pregnancy for Healthy Couples

Probability of Pregnancy

Probability of Pregnancy

Couples with no factors causing infertility, having intercourse at the time of ovulation every month, will only become pregnant once every 4 months, or a pregnancy rate of 22 percent per month. Therefore, infertility is not considered until a couple has been trying to become pregnant for at least a year for women under 35. The relation between Probability of Pregnancy and age is most evident for this period. If you’re 35 or older, it’s just six months; sooner if you’ve had a previous cesarean section, difficult delivery, or irregular cycles.

Fertility Roadblocks

Around 20 percent of couples will have failed to achieve pregnancy in that time and will face investigation and treatment for infertility. The most common physical roadblocks associated with fertility include problems with; ovulation, semen, the cervix, the uterus, the peritoneum (tissue that lines the abdominal and pelvic cavities), and the fallopian tubes. Diagnosis of infertility may take the use of a special doctor called an infertility specialist or a reproductive endocrinologist.

Increasing the Probability of Pregnancy

Treatment may vary depending on infertility-related problems and the low probability of pregnancy. The good news is that at least half of these will be helped by relatively simple means and the remainder can be helped by the modern assisted reproductive technologies which began with IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) in the late 1970s.
